The freedom people feel can't be different based on cultural differences of independence and decision-making. Many teenagers see freedom as the chance for self-expression while still considering their cultural background. In Pakistan, teenage freedom arises from an excessive strictness of society, which is characterized by the centralization of everything in a single family. For teenagers, there are numerous norms of behavior that dictate who one should marry, what profession one should pursue, and how long one can spend with friends. Even though these norms aim at protecting and preserving young people, the latter often feel disregarded.
As a teenager, I have seen Pakistani society impose a rule according to which teenagers cannot hang out alone and cannot spend time freely with people their age. This norm concerns mostly girls. The culture forces teenagers to abide by everything said by their parents despite the fact that young people have developing personalities, curiosity for exposure, and want to make some decisions on their own. Moreover, social networks have enabled teenagers to see how other people live; thus, some norms do not suit the modern generation and prevent them from living life to the fullest, this sometimes results in a generation gap between what the parents expect from the children and what the adolescents actually need emotionally.
According to me, being free means respecting parents and the culture but having an opportunity to express and find oneself in the way one wishes to. The family honor aspect within Pakistani culture may contribute to misunderstandings between teenagers and their parents. With proper communication, trying to understand each other, giving teenagers some freedom and independence may result in a better relationship between the parents and kids. This strikes a balance between guidance and independence which might lead to increased trust and understanding of the emotions of the youth.

Teenagers aspire to have freedom. For teenagers in the Philippines, freedom means expressing themselves, making their own choices, and pursuing their dreams while still respecting their family, culture, and responsibilities. Filipino teens see freedom in choosing their friends, sharing their opinions, and exploring their talents through school activities. However, freedom is not always easy to achieve, some might face strict rules, family expectations, and the pressure of their parents pinning an entire future on them which limits their access in experiencing being a teenager and can sometimes create emotional distance between their parents.
As a teenager in the , I have observed that freedom is not just about being allowed to do what we want, but also about being trusted to make good decisions. Many Filipino teenagers want the freedom to express themselves, choose their own interests, and spend time with friends, yet they still need to follow family rules and expectations. I noticed that when parents and adults give trust and guidance instead of too many restrictions, teenagers become more responsible and confident. For example, they trust me in making my own decisions in school, in the community, and in choosing my friends. Now I feel more responsible in every situation. Through these experiences, I realized that freedom comes with responsibility and respect for others
Freedom for teenagers in the Philippines is deeply connected to culture and values. Filipino families are often close and protective, so teenagers are usually guided by strict rules and expectations from parents and elders. While some young people may feel limited by this, it also reflects the Filipino value of caring for family and protecting one another. At the same time, today’s teenagers want more freedom to express their opinions, follow their passions, and make decisions for themselves and still respect their family and culture. This shows how Filipino culture is slowly changing, balancing traditional family values with the growing desire of the youth for independence and self-expression.
As a teenager in both Pakistan and the Philippines, I think freedom means being able to express ourselves, make our own choices, and follow our dreams while still respecting our families, culture, and responsibilities. However, the level of freedom teenagers experience can be different in each country. In Pakistan, cultural traditions, family expectations, and religious beliefs often influence decisions about clothing, friendships, social activities, and career choices, which can sometimes limit teenagers’ independence. In the Philippines, teenagers are generally given more freedom to express their opinions, explore their interests, use social media openly, and participate in different school or community activities, although family guidance and respect for elders are still highly valued. Even with these differences, teenagers in both countries experience pressure from society and their families to meet expectations and behave responsibly. Many teenagers simply want the freedom to discover who they are, share their thoughts without fear, and make decisions about their future. In the end, freedom is not just about doing whatever we want, but about having trust, responsibility, and the opportunity to grow into confident and independent individuals while still honoring the values taught by our families and culture.
