My Journey to Catch Them Young (1)
May 28, 2019
Story
The year 2016 was quite challenging for me but it was the yearI had what I call "funding breakthrough" for my program InspireIT. In December 2016, I won a grant from an organization in USA. I was speechless when I opened my email and saw that I won a grant! It was as if my heart was going to jump out of my body with joy!
When I started InspireIT in 2014, my vision was to get more young girls and women actively involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). That is still my vision and I am working towards that.
I am realist.I believe that one should match their words with actions and that is why I launched STEM Club in 2016 and applied for grant for support. My main aim of launching STEM club is to address the growing lack of interest in science subjects among young girls in primary and secondary schools in Nigeria. I felt the time has come for me to go out physically and hear firsthand from young girls in primary and secondary schools the challenges they face as regardsscience subjects and how it affects their desire to pursue a career in STEM.
I want students especially young girls to pick interest in STEM early. I want young girls to be excited and willing to explore STEM and possibly find solutions to some of the challenges we face today with science and technology.
I will be sharing the part 2 of this story as I visit some primary and secondary schools in Nigeria to officially launch STEM club.
