My Journey

I am Renju Rema, a freelance Multimedia Journalist from Kerala, India. My father was an ex-serviceman and mother housewife. I have an elder sister and a younger sister. We are three girls, but my parents never discriminated us on gender basis. In India discriminatory attitudes towards men and women have existed from generations to come and continue to be an enormous problem in the society. This gave women a secondary status within the household and workplace, which affects women’s health, upbringing, independence and status in the family, from an early age.

Mass awareness and debates on the subject are required to eliminate bias and stereotypes and make a change. The women need to get Government and public support, and better education to demand their rights.

In my reporting, I paid special attention to highlight the issues of women and children. Compared to other parts of India, Keralites are highly educated and culturally sophisticated. This helps to reduce attitude towards women and they are getting almost equal rights. I wish to bring this type of change in other parts of India as well. I always seek support from women led NGOs. I highlight their activities and they are also curious about finding solution to women-oriented issues that I bring their attention. I wish to get connected with these international women’s organisations, bring issues of women to the public forefront and bring as much as support as possible for them. I wish to prove myself to be a powerful representative from India.
