Drenched Dreams Beneath the Flyover

Drenched Dreams Beneath the Flyover

— A True Story from the Kalshi Floods

It was just past dawn when 9-year-old Mim clutched her little brother’s hand and waded through waist-deep water, her school bag soaked, her feet trembling. The rain hadn’t stopped for two days. Their home—a tiny tin-roofed room in the Kalshi slum—was now a floating memory.

Her mother, Shirin, had spent the night awake, holding her children close while trying to protect their few belongings stacked on the bed. But by morning, the water had reached her chest. With no choice left, they abandoned everything—clothes, books, food, and memories—to find refuge under the cold concrete shelter of the Kalshi flyover.

There, hundreds of others had gathered. Mothers huddled with crying babies. Elderly men sat in silence, staring at the water that swallowed their lives. Mim asked softly, “Ma, will I be able to go to school again?” Shirin wiped her tears, unsure how to answer.

That same morning, Team Sombhabona arrived. We found Mim and her family under the flyover, soaked and shivering. Mim recognized our logo and said, “You came to our school once… Pushpokoli.” Her eyes lit up with a fragile spark of hope.

We listened. We cried. We acted.

Emergency shelter was arranged for Mim’s family. Dry clothes, warm food, and safety were provided. The Pushpokoli School team reached out to more families. Phone calls turned into rescue efforts. Lost hope turned into a network of care.

This isn’t just Mim’s story—it’s the story of hundreds of families who are now living without roofs but not without dignity. In the face of rain and ruin, we saw something more powerful: resilience.

And this is our promise—as long as a child like Mim dreams of returning to school, we will walk through any flood to get her there.
