Born and raised in a ghetto, I have always questioned the poor involvement of women in medical practice. I have never met a female medical Dr before I picked my JAMB from and filled in Medicine and Surgery.
I went to the university and studied Medicine and Surgery. I was able to meet alot of female Drs. Then the question popped up. Despite the high incidence of breast cancer in my country and globally, my state (Sokoto) has produced no female oncologist. Not even a resident in training. This challenged me and I did what I learnt to do all my life, filling in the gap and making a difference.
I'm currently working as a senior resident in oncology. But reality hit me hard. The poor health education among people in my environment made more than 90 percent of cancer cases in the country present late to the hospital. I believe the rate is even higher in my immediate locality. I realized I have to do just more than seeing patients. I have to educate, advocate and tell my patients stories.
