Abo ajefyi means Menstruation in Gbagyi ;A tribe in Central Nigeria. These tribe celebrate first Menstruation in young girls. In these celebration Older female relatives will bath the young girls with herbs and water cooked and gotten from a traditional pot ,dress them up and also put the girls through what is expected and to do growing up as a woman according to their culture.
Gbagyi traditions emphasis that a woman seeing abo ajefyi ( Menstruation) should not make food for the family or anyone to eat .I was told it's a taboo with huge sacred consequences .
The question is should culture be reference in growth and development? We had traditions before civilization. Uhm!!! What’s the way forward?
Do we need to convince a young girl from Gbagyi ,a tribe in Central Nigeria that she doesn't need the traditional rituals growing up. How safe is this for her ?
